LANScan Network Protocols The Protocols view shows all protocols used on the network. What's important about Protocols? If you know the protocol, then you can identify the application being used. Also, you can find unexpected or unwanted data. Maybe you have a TCP/IP based network, but some devices are transmitting Novell SPX/IPX packets - the Protocol view would show that. Most network protocols conform to a multilayer protocol model. You cannot simply show a protocol - you have to show a protocol at a layer in the protocol model. LANScan supports all layers, and you can switch back and forth to see different layers. In the example below, LANScan is displaying protocols at the Session layer
Protocol names the protocol in use. LANScan uses common protocol names where possible - but for special protocols it will display 'Other' or the Protocol number. Current shows the data transmitted during the last sample period and Total displays all data transmitted since LANScan started or was reset. The Settings dialog is used to customize the view. It is accessed and works just like the Conversations Settings dialog - visit the Conversations tour stop form more information. The popup menu lets you choose the protocol layer to view. Click on More Info for details.
